Matchday & Training Preparation Hub | U14s

“Proper preparation prevents poor performance. How you warm up your body before a whistle blows dictates how sharply and safely you play.”

1. 🌡️ Phase 1: Pulse Raiser & Mobility (The Warm-Up)

Get the heart rate up and blood flowing to the working muscles. Never walk out cold straight into a high-intensity sprint.

  • Light Cardio: 3–5 minutes of light jogging, dynamic sidesteps, and backward running.
  • Dynamic Mobility: Moving stretches to loosen up the hips, groins, hamstrings, and shoulders.
    • Key Exercises: Gate openers/closers, walking lunges with a twist, high knees, and heel flicks.

2. 🪩 Phase 2: Activation & Mini-Bands

Wake up the glutes, hips, and core to protect your joints and give you explosive power on the pitch.

  • Mini-Band Routine: Place bands around the knees or ankles for short, controlled sets.
    • Lateral Monster Walks: Step side to side while keeping tension in the band to protect knees and strengthen hips.
    • Clamshells / Glute Bridges: Wake up the glutes so your acceleration off the mark is sharp.
  • Core Bracing: Brief plank holds or dynamic bird-dogs to keep your posture solid when shielding the ball or going into 50/50 challenges.

3. ⚽ Phase 3: Football-Specific & Ball Mastery

Transition from general movement into actual football actions at match pace.

  • Passing & Receiving: Short, sharp passing combinations on the ground, emphasizing crisp weight of pass and receiving on the back foot.
  • Dynamic 1v1s & Acceleration: Short, progressive bursts—starting with shadow movements and scaling up to game-speed duels.
  • Goalkeeper Specific (If applicable): Handling, footwork patterns, and low/high diving prep integrated while outfield players finish dynamic passing sequences.

4. 🧠 Mental & Physical Readiness Checklist

  • Kit Check: Boots cleaned, shin pads packed, water bottle filled, and appropriate layers on if it’s a cold Tyneside morning.
  • Switching On: Use the warm-up to leave school or home distractions behind. By the time the final stretches are done, focus is entirely on team shape, communication, and the first whistle.
