Goalkeeping

⚽ U14 Goalkeeper Training: Video Guide & Key Focus Points

Part 1: Footwork & Set Position

Watch for:

  • How the keeper takes quick, micro-adjustments (shuffle steps) instead of big, crossing strides as the ball moves.
  • The moment the shooter sets their plant foot—notice how the keeper becomes completely still and balanced on the balls of their feet.

Key Cue:

  • Be set before the kick. If you are still moving sideways when the shot is taken, you won’t be able to push off.

Part 2: Handling & Catching Technique

Watch for:

  • Contour Catch (W-Shape): Thumbs close together behind the ball for shots at head/chest height.
  • Cup Catch: Elbows tucked in, wrists together, absorbing the ball into the chest for low/waist-height shots.

Key Cue:

  • Catch with your fingers and wrists, not your palms. Soft hands absorb power; stiff hands cause spills.

Part 3: Low Diving & Collapsing

Watch for:

  • The attack step—the keeper steps slightly forward and out toward the angle of the ball, rather than falling straight sideways or backward.
  • The contact point: landing on the side of the thigh and upper back, NOT directly on the shoulder or elbow.

Key Cue:

  • Drive with the leg closest to the ball. Don’t just fall—push off the turf to extend your reach.

Part 4: Distribution & Quick Transitions

Watch for:

  • How quickly the keeper scans the pitch immediately after securing the ball.
  • The overhand bowl/throw technique: stepping forward with the opposite foot to drive speed and accuracy to wide players.

Key Cue:

  • First thought after a save: Can we counter-attack? Heads up instantly.
