Heaton Stannington U14 Reds: Our Game Model

Welcome to our blueprint for the season. This is how Ami and I want us to play, train, and work together on the pitch. Keep this handy so you always know your roles and how we operate as a team!

Our Core Mindset

  • Tuesdays are for Development: Training is our classroom. This is where we learn new skills, try to be brave on the ball, and aren’t afraid to make mistakes.
  • Saturdays are for Teamwork: Matchdays are about playing smart, fighting for each other, and executing our game plan as one solid unit.

Our Formation: 4-3-3 We set up with a back four, a midfield trio (anchored and linked by our No. 10), and a fast forward line. Every player attacks together and defends together.

When We Have the Ball (In Possession)

  • Start Short & Safe: Every attack starts with our keeper. Our centre halves and full-backs must drop deep to offer immediate, short passing options. We are brave, calm, and keep possession in our own defensive third.
  • Find the Midfield: The goal of playing out from the back is to draw the opposition in, then safely move the ball to our midfielders or into the feet of our No. 10.
  • Strike Fast: The second our midfield gets the ball, our tempo changes. We immediately look up and play quick, direct passes into space for our fast forward to run onto. Short at the back, fast and direct at the top!

When They Have the Ball (Out of Possession)

  • The Mid-Block: We do not exhaust ourselves chasing the ball in their penalty area. Instead, our attackers drop back into the middle third of the pitch to create a compact, structured wall.
  • Protect the Backline: Our defensive line sits slightly deeper. This protects our goal from long balls over the top and keeps us incredibly difficult to break down.
  • Set the Trap: We let their centre halves keep the ball in their own half. As soon as they try to pass forward into our midfield or out wide, we aggressively press together to win it back.

Winning & Losing the Ball (Transitions)

  • If we lose it: Sprint back into our compact mid-block shape immediately. Protect the middle of the pitch.
  • If we win it: Look forward instantly! Find the No. 10 or play the early ball over the top for the striker before the opposition can set their defence.
  • Player Roles & Responsibilities in Our 4-3-3
  • Goalkeeper
  • In Possession: You are our first attacker. Look to play short, safe, and accurate passes to the centre backs or full backs to start our build-up.
  • Out of Possession: Command your penalty area. Because our defence sits a little deeper, be ready to confidently collect any over-hit long balls. Keep talking and organizing the backline.
  • Centre Backs
  • In Possession: Split wide and drop deep to give the keeper easy passing angles. Stay calm on the ball and look for a safe pass into the full backs or midfield.
  • Out of Possession: Hold a slightly deeper line. Do not get pulled too high up the pitch. Keep the attackers in front of you, stay solid, and protect the space behind.
  • Full Backs (Right & Left)
  • In Possession: Drop deep to help the keeper and centre backs build out. Provide an outlet on the wings to move the ball safely up the pitch.
  • Out of Possession: Tuck in close to the centre backs. Prioritize your defensive shape and stay compact—especially on the right side, making sure we always have enough numbers to stop opposition attacks.
  • Central Midfielders (The Engine Room)
  • In Possession: Be the vital link. Show for the ball from the defence, secure it, and immediately look forward to find the No. 10 or launch a direct pass to the forwards.
  • Out of Possession: Work tirelessly in our mid-block. Screen the defence, close down the middle of the pitch, and provide extra cover for our full backs.
  • The No. 10 (Attacking Midfielder)
  • In Possession: You are our playmaker. Find pockets of space between the opposition’s midfield and defence. When you receive the ball, turn quickly—your very first thought is playing that killer, direct pass to our fast forward.
  • Out of Possession: Drop in to keep our midfield compact. Read the game and anticipate where the ball will fall so you are instantly ready to counter-attack when we win it back.
  • Forwards (Striker & Wingers)
  • In Possession: Play on the shoulder of their last defender. Always be ready to use your pace and run into the space behind their defence to latch onto early passes from the midfield.
  • Out of Possession: Do not waste energy pressing their keeper high up. Drop back into the middle third to complete our mid-block trap, staying ready to explode forward the second we win the ball.
